Why Ride?
The Ride to Cure Diabetes is a unique and exciting way to fight diabetes, to visit beautiful venues across the country and meet cycling enthusiasts from all over! The Ride program originated in the Midwest in 1998, as a local event, with 15 riders raising $47,000. Today it has grown to a 5 venue per year national event contributing over $2.9 million to research to find a cure for diabetes. This is an experience that will bring you many new friends, long lasting memories and a rewarding experience knowing your efforts have moved us closer to finding a cure for diabetes.
How do you participate?
This is a fundraising event where all contributions are fully tax deductible. This JDRF commitment covers your travel, lodging and meals for the Ride Weekend. In addition, we will help you prepare with a national coaching program using the latest technology from Training Peaks, and local coaches and training rides with fellow team members to get you ready to ride. JDRF is the only charity Ride that certifies all coaches through USA Cycling. JDRF will work with you to help you succeed and has developed some helpful tools to make fundraising as easy as possible.
Who can ride?
Anyone who is 18 years of age or older on the date of the Ride (Riders between 13 and 18 can participate with the signed consent and participation of a parent or guardian), who can raise the minimum fundraising requirement in pledges.
Isn't it hard to meet the fundraising requirement?
Not according to many of our past riders! Once you start contacting people, you will be surprised how quickly the money (and the admiration) rolls in. And, based on their experiences, we have tips that will help you bring in pledges more easily.
Meet the Challenge. Find a Cure.
Every 8 seconds, one person is diagnosed with type 1(or juvenile diabetes). As many as 3 million Americans have Type 1 diabetes and diabetes affects over 194 million people worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that number will double by 2030.
It is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, non-traumatic amputations, and a leading cause of nerve damage, stroke, and heart attacks. In 2002, diabetes accounted for more than $132 billion in health care costs in the U.S.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes – a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $900 million in direct funding to diabetes research. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
